Field Trip to the Port of Houston

Today we went on a boat ride at the port of Houston. We couldn't wait to board the ship!

Here we go!!!

Field Trip to the Weather Museum

We had so much fun at the Weather Museum today!

We went into a hurricane machine that had winds up to 70 mph blowing on us! It was so fun!

We were given some cool weather t-shirts!

We learned about flooding and how the Houston area has built retention ponds to help handle flooding.

Our guide, who is a Meteorologist, did an experiment with us representing low and high pressure.

We went in front of the green screen and presented a weather report just like real Meteorologists!

We had so much fun trying to figure out how to point to certain areas on the Map. We found Low and High pressure areas and were able to show the path of the fronts each were bringing.

A lot of us found that it was tricky to watch the screen and point to what we were trying to! It took practice!

We learned about hurricanes and the history of the severity of storms. When a storm is really bad they will retire the name and not use it again. To chose names they go down in alphabetical order, alternating by male and female names. We learned about Hurricane Catrina and Rita, since they happened before most of us were born. We also learned about IKE, because most of us were too young to remember. The storm that caused the most devastation in our Area was the Great Storm of 1900, that hit Galveston.

Our Research

We are researching about the Planets and will make trading cards with all of the neat fun facts we learn!

Tuesday, June 17, 2014

Today we learned about Galaxies. There are three different types of galaxies. spiral, elliptical and irregular. Our galaxy, 'The Milky Way' is a spiral galaxy. If the Earth were in an elliptical galaxy, we would not have night. It would be bright, both day and night!

Here is what spiral galaxies look like.

Here are examples of elliptical galaxies.

Lastly, If a galaxy doesn't fit into the other two categories. It is an irregular galaxy.

After learning about the different types of galaxies, we made our own! First, we got a coffee filter and decorated it with neat designs using markers. Then we dropped water on it and watched the colors blend together. Our galaxies were all unique!

Once our galaxies were finished drying, we added them to our universe board and gave them all names!

Here is our awesome universe! We had fun creating this neat illustration!

Types of Stars

We  learned about types of stars and made our own Universe!

Here is our Bulletin Universe! Tune in tomorrow, we will be adding our galaxies!

Gravity Makes it Happen

Yes, Gravity is a mystery. Sure, we know a lot about gravity. We know that it is a force that pulls you toward another object, or in our case the Earth. But it is much more complex! Have you ever stopped to think for a moment how much it would affect us to not have gravity here on Earth? Thank goodness for gravity!

Here are some fun facts about gravity!
Did you know that...
* Planets have their spherical shape because of gravity.
* Your mass stays the same no matter where you are. If you are on the moon, your weight is one-sixth your weight on the Earth, but your mass is exactly the same.
* The gravity of the sun is so strong that it holds all nine planets in the solar system in their orbits. Don't forget that the earth is 93 million miles away from the sun- that is a strong gravitational pull!!!
* Gravity is the weakest of the four fundamental forces of the universe!

Let's check it out!

We made a swing using cardboard and string to see how long the eraser would stay in the middle. We slowly started to swing the platform in a circle. We gradually increased its speed until you can swing it overhead without the eraser falling off.

We noticed that the gravitational force kept it held down to the cardboard swing even when we did it fast but the key was to keep it controlled. If something interfered with the consistency or became uncontrolled the eraser went flying off.
